TRIPLE
HORSE PLAYS BALL
Atlanta, Georgia -
For the past several months Triple Horse Productions has
trotted across North America filming NBA stars for a new
open to air before NBA games on TBS. The spot features
such all-stars as Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant, Patrick
Ewing, Alonzo Mourning, Vince Carter, and Alan Iverson.
Filmed on location in Miami, Toronto, New York, LA, and
many places in between, this massive undertaking was directed
by Karl Horstmann.
The intricate open, which takes
place in a seemingly fully functional mission control
center and on the streets of a large, nameless city, is
an electric celebration that conveys the feeling that
the NBA on TBS the biggest, most thrilling show on earth.
"Beyond the obvious technical
challenges," Horstmann says, "was the difficulty
in getting the performances we wanted from the players
in the limited time we had to work with them. Green screen
work is difficult enough for professional actors let alone
non-acting athletes-and generally we only got the players
a few minutes just before or just after their practices."
In the open, which gives new meaning
to the term "street ball," the NBA players appear
as giants towering above city skyscrapers on streets where
they're playing ball, as helicopters buzz around their
heads and thousands of fans cheer them on from the sidewalks
below. The enormous basketball the players use is launched
like a satellite going into orbit from a massive NASA-like
mission control center. (page
